How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 49 ÷ 100 = 0.49
  2. Multiply: 0.49 × 65 = 31.85
  3. Check: Work backwards: 31.85 ÷ 65 × 100 = 49%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 49/100 = part/65, so part = 49 × 65 ÷ 100 = 31.85. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =49%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

31.85 is the 49% share of 65. The remaining 51% is 33.15, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 49% off an item priced $65 saves $31.85, so you pay $33.15.

Adding and taking away 49%

Increasing 65 by 49% gives 96.85 and decreasing it by 49% gives 33.15. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 49% and then lowering the result by 49% ends at 49.3935, because the second 49% is taken of a bigger number.
