How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5
- Multiply: 1.5 × 5 = 7.5
- Check: Work backwards: 7.5 ÷ 5 × 100 = 150%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 150/100 = part/5, so part = 150 × 5 ÷ 100 = 7.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =150%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 150% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 5: it is 1.5 times 5.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 150% of its $5 cost means selling it for $7.5.
Adding and taking away 150%
Increasing 5 by 150% gives 12.5. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 150% and then lowering the result by 150% ends at -6.25, because the second 150% is taken of a bigger number.
