How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Multiply: 0.5 × 62 = 31
  3. Check: Work backwards: 31 ÷ 62 × 100 = 50%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 50/100 = part/62, so part = 50 × 62 ÷ 100 = 31. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =50%*62. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

31 is the 50% share of 62. The remaining 50% is 31, and the two parts add back up to 62.

Discounts: 50% off an item priced $62 saves $31, so you pay $31.

Adding and taking away 50%

Increasing 62 by 50% gives 93 and decreasing it by 50% gives 31. These do not cancel out: raising 62 by 50% and then lowering the result by 50% ends at 46.5, because the second 50% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 62% of 50. 50% of 62 and 62% of 50 are always equal (both are 50 × 62 ÷ 100 = 31), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
