How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 62 ÷ 100 = 0.62
  2. Multiply: 0.62 × 50 = 31
  3. Check: Work backwards: 31 ÷ 50 × 100 = 62%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 62/100 = part/50, so part = 62 × 50 ÷ 100 = 31. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =62%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

31 is the 62% share of 50. The remaining 38% is 19, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 62% off an item priced $50 saves $31, so you pay $19.

Adding and taking away 62%

Increasing 50 by 62% gives 81 and decreasing it by 62% gives 19. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 62% and then lowering the result by 62% ends at 30.78, because the second 62% is taken of a bigger number.
