How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 500 ÷ 100 = 5
- Multiply: 5 × 5 = 25
- Check: Work backwards: 25 ÷ 5 × 100 = 500%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 500/100 = part/5, so part = 500 × 5 ÷ 100 = 25. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =500%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 500% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 5: it is 5 times 5.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 500% of its $5 cost means selling it for $25.
Adding and taking away 500%
Increasing 5 by 500% gives 30. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 500% and then lowering the result by 500% ends at -120, because the second 500% is taken of a bigger number.
