How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 16 = 8.16
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.16 ÷ 16 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/16, so part = 51 × 16 ÷ 100 = 8.16. Both methods always give the same answer.
