How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
- Multiply: 0.51 × 5 = 2.55
- Check: Work backwards: 2.55 ÷ 5 × 100 = 51%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/5, so part = 51 × 5 ÷ 100 = 2.55. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =51%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.55 is the 51% share of 5. The remaining 49% is 2.45, and the two parts add back up to 5.
Discounts: 51% off an item priced $5 saves $2.55, so you pay $2.45.
Adding and taking away 51%
Increasing 5 by 51% gives 7.55 and decreasing it by 51% gives 2.45. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 3.6995, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
