How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 54 ÷ 100 = 0.54
  2. Multiply: 0.54 × 64 = 34.56
  3. Check: Work backwards: 34.56 ÷ 64 × 100 = 54%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 54/100 = part/64, so part = 54 × 64 ÷ 100 = 34.56. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =54%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

34.56 is the 54% share of 64. The remaining 46% is 29.44, and the two parts add back up to 64.

Discounts: 54% off an item priced $64 saves $34.56, so you pay $29.44.

Adding and taking away 54%

Increasing 64 by 54% gives 98.56 and decreasing it by 54% gives 29.44. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 54% and then lowering the result by 54% ends at 45.3376, because the second 54% is taken of a bigger number.
