How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 56 ÷ 100 = 0.56
  2. Multiply: 0.56 × 2 = 1.12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.12 ÷ 2 × 100 = 56%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 56/100 = part/2, so part = 56 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =56%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.12 is the 56% share of 2. The remaining 44% is 0.88, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 56% off an item priced $2 saves $1.12, so you pay $0.88.

Adding and taking away 56%

Increasing 2 by 56% gives 3.12 and decreasing it by 56% gives 0.88. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 56% and then lowering the result by 56% ends at 1.3728, because the second 56% is taken of a bigger number.
