How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 56 = 1.12
- Check: Work backwards: 1.12 ÷ 56 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/56, so part = 2 × 56 ÷ 100 = 1.12. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*56. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.12 is the 2% share of 56. The remaining 98% is 54.88, and the two parts add back up to 56.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $56 saves $1.12, so you pay $54.88.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 56 by 2% gives 57.12 and decreasing it by 2% gives 54.88. These do not cancel out: raising 56 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 55.9776, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
