How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 56 ÷ 100 = 0.56
- Multiply: 0.56 × 40 = 22.4
- Check: Work backwards: 22.4 ÷ 40 × 100 = 56%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 56/100 = part/40, so part = 56 × 40 ÷ 100 = 22.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =56%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
22.4 is the 56% share of 40. The remaining 44% is 17.6, and the two parts add back up to 40.
Discounts: 56% off an item priced $40 saves $22.4, so you pay $17.6.
Adding and taking away 56%
Increasing 40 by 56% gives 62.4 and decreasing it by 56% gives 17.6. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 56% and then lowering the result by 56% ends at 27.456, because the second 56% is taken of a bigger number.
