How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 58 ÷ 100 = 0.58
  2. Multiply: 0.58 × 13 = 7.54
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.54 ÷ 13 × 100 = 58%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 58/100 = part/13, so part = 58 × 13 ÷ 100 = 7.54. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =58%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.54 is the 58% share of 13. The remaining 42% is 5.46, and the two parts add back up to 13.

Discounts: 58% off an item priced $13 saves $7.54, so you pay $5.46.

Adding and taking away 58%

Increasing 13 by 58% gives 20.54 and decreasing it by 58% gives 5.46. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 58% and then lowering the result by 58% ends at 8.6268, because the second 58% is taken of a bigger number.
