How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 58 ÷ 100 = 0.58
  2. Multiply: 0.58 × 5 = 2.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.9 ÷ 5 × 100 = 58%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 58/100 = part/5, so part = 58 × 5 ÷ 100 = 2.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =58%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.9 is the 58% share of 5. The remaining 42% is 2.1, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 58% off an item priced $5 saves $2.9, so you pay $2.1.

Adding and taking away 58%

Increasing 5 by 58% gives 7.9 and decreasing it by 58% gives 2.1. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 58% and then lowering the result by 58% ends at 3.318, because the second 58% is taken of a bigger number.
