How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 58 ÷ 100 = 0.58
- Multiply: 0.58 × 50 = 29
- Check: Work backwards: 29 ÷ 50 × 100 = 58%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 58/100 = part/50, so part = 58 × 50 ÷ 100 = 29. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =58%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
29 is the 58% share of 50. The remaining 42% is 21, and the two parts add back up to 50.
Discounts: 58% off an item priced $50 saves $29, so you pay $21.
Adding and taking away 58%
Increasing 50 by 58% gives 79 and decreasing it by 58% gives 21. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 58% and then lowering the result by 58% ends at 33.18, because the second 58% is taken of a bigger number.
