How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 58 ÷ 100 = 0.58
  2. Multiply: 0.58 × 65 = 37.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 37.7 ÷ 65 × 100 = 58%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 58/100 = part/65, so part = 58 × 65 ÷ 100 = 37.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =58%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

37.7 is the 58% share of 65. The remaining 42% is 27.3, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 58% off an item priced $65 saves $37.7, so you pay $27.3.

Adding and taking away 58%

Increasing 65 by 58% gives 102.7 and decreasing it by 58% gives 27.3. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 58% and then lowering the result by 58% ends at 43.134, because the second 58% is taken of a bigger number.
