How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 39 = 2.34
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.34 ÷ 39 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/39, so part = 6 × 39 ÷ 100 = 2.34. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*39. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.34 is the 6% share of 39. The remaining 94% is 36.66, and the two parts add back up to 39.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $39 saves $2.34, so you pay $36.66.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 39 by 6% gives 41.34 and decreasing it by 6% gives 36.66. These do not cancel out: raising 39 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 38.8596, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
