How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 41 = 2.46
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.46 ÷ 41 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/41, so part = 6 × 41 ÷ 100 = 2.46. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*41. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.46 is the 6% share of 41. The remaining 94% is 38.54, and the two parts add back up to 41.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $41 saves $2.46, so you pay $38.54.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 41 by 6% gives 43.46 and decreasing it by 6% gives 38.54. These do not cancel out: raising 41 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 40.8524, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
