How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 64 = 3.84
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.84 ÷ 64 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/64, so part = 6 × 64 ÷ 100 = 3.84. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.84 is the 6% share of 64. The remaining 94% is 60.16, and the two parts add back up to 64.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $64 saves $3.84, so you pay $60.16.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 64 by 6% gives 67.84 and decreasing it by 6% gives 60.16. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 63.7696, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
