How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 125 = 75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 75 ÷ 125 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/125, so part = 60 × 125 ÷ 100 = 75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*125. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

75 is the 60% share of 125. The remaining 40% is 50, and the two parts add back up to 125.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $125 saves $75, so you pay $50.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 125 by 60% gives 200 and decreasing it by 60% gives 50. These do not cancel out: raising 125 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 80, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
