How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 125 ÷ 100 = 1.25
  2. Multiply: 1.25 × 60 = 75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 75 ÷ 60 × 100 = 125%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 125/100 = part/60, so part = 125 × 60 ÷ 100 = 75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =125%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

Because 125% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 60: it is 1.25 times 60.

Mark-ups: pricing an item at 125% of its $60 cost means selling it for $75.

Adding and taking away 125%

Increasing 60 by 125% gives 135. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 125% and then lowering the result by 125% ends at -33.75, because the second 125% is taken of a bigger number.
