How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
- Multiply: 0.6 × 16 = 9.6
- Check: Work backwards: 9.6 ÷ 16 × 100 = 60%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/16, so part = 60 × 16 ÷ 100 = 9.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =60%*16. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9.6 is the 60% share of 16. The remaining 40% is 6.4, and the two parts add back up to 16.
Discounts: 60% off an item priced $16 saves $9.6, so you pay $6.4.
Adding and taking away 60%
Increasing 16 by 60% gives 25.6 and decreasing it by 60% gives 6.4. These do not cancel out: raising 16 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 10.24, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
