How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
- Multiply: 0.6 × 18 = 10.8
- Check: Work backwards: 10.8 ÷ 18 × 100 = 60%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/18, so part = 60 × 18 ÷ 100 = 10.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =60%*18. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
10.8 is the 60% share of 18. The remaining 40% is 7.2, and the two parts add back up to 18.
Discounts: 60% off an item priced $18 saves $10.8, so you pay $7.2.
Adding and taking away 60%
Increasing 18 by 60% gives 28.8 and decreasing it by 60% gives 7.2. These do not cancel out: raising 18 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 11.52, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 18% of 60. 60% of 18 and 18% of 60 are always equal (both are 60 × 18 ÷ 100 = 10.8), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
