How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 21 = 12.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12.6 ÷ 21 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/21, so part = 60 × 21 ÷ 100 = 12.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*21. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12.6 is the 60% share of 21. The remaining 40% is 8.4, and the two parts add back up to 21.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $21 saves $12.6, so you pay $8.4.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 21 by 60% gives 33.6 and decreasing it by 60% gives 8.4. These do not cancel out: raising 21 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 13.44, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
