How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
  2. Multiply: 0.21 × 60 = 12.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12.6 ÷ 60 × 100 = 21%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/60, so part = 21 × 60 ÷ 100 = 12.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =21%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12.6 is the 21% share of 60. The remaining 79% is 47.4, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 21% off an item priced $60 saves $12.6, so you pay $47.4.

Adding and taking away 21%

Increasing 60 by 21% gives 72.6 and decreasing it by 21% gives 47.4. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 57.354, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.
