How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 3 = 1.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.8 ÷ 3 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/3, so part = 60 × 3 ÷ 100 = 1.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.8 is the 60% share of 3. The remaining 40% is 1.2, and the two parts add back up to 3.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $3 saves $1.8, so you pay $1.2.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 3 by 60% gives 4.8 and decreasing it by 60% gives 1.2. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 1.92, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 3% of 60. 60% of 3 and 3% of 60 are always equal (both are 60 × 3 ÷ 100 = 1.8), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
