How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 60 = 1.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.8 ÷ 60 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/60, so part = 3 × 60 ÷ 100 = 1.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.8 is the 3% share of 60. The remaining 97% is 58.2, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $60 saves $1.8, so you pay $58.2.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 60 by 3% gives 61.8 and decreasing it by 3% gives 58.2. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 59.946, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
