How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 33 = 19.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 19.8 ÷ 33 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/33, so part = 60 × 33 ÷ 100 = 19.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*33. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

19.8 is the 60% share of 33. The remaining 40% is 13.2, and the two parts add back up to 33.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $33 saves $19.8, so you pay $13.2.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 33 by 60% gives 52.8 and decreasing it by 60% gives 13.2. These do not cancel out: raising 33 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 21.12, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
