How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 33 ÷ 100 = 0.33
  2. Multiply: 0.33 × 60 = 19.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 19.8 ÷ 60 × 100 = 33%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 33/100 = part/60, so part = 33 × 60 ÷ 100 = 19.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =33%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

19.8 is the 33% share of 60. The remaining 67% is 40.2, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 33% off an item priced $60 saves $19.8, so you pay $40.2.

Adding and taking away 33%

Increasing 60 by 33% gives 79.8 and decreasing it by 33% gives 40.2. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 33% and then lowering the result by 33% ends at 53.466, because the second 33% is taken of a bigger number.
