How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 66 = 39.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 39.6 ÷ 66 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/66, so part = 60 × 66 ÷ 100 = 39.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*66. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

39.6 is the 60% share of 66. The remaining 40% is 26.4, and the two parts add back up to 66.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $66 saves $39.6, so you pay $26.4.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 66 by 60% gives 105.6 and decreasing it by 60% gives 26.4. These do not cancel out: raising 66 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 42.24, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
