How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 9 = 5.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.4 ÷ 9 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/9, so part = 60 × 9 ÷ 100 = 5.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.4 is the 60% share of 9. The remaining 40% is 3.6, and the two parts add back up to 9.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $9 saves $5.4, so you pay $3.6.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 9 by 60% gives 14.4 and decreasing it by 60% gives 3.6. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 5.76, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
