How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 60 = 5.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.4 ÷ 60 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/60, so part = 9 × 60 ÷ 100 = 5.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.4 is the 9% share of 60. The remaining 91% is 54.6, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $60 saves $5.4, so you pay $54.6.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 60 by 9% gives 65.4 and decreasing it by 9% gives 54.6. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 59.514, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
