How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 61 ÷ 100 = 0.61
  2. Multiply: 0.61 × 75 = 45.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 45.75 ÷ 75 × 100 = 61%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 61/100 = part/75, so part = 61 × 75 ÷ 100 = 45.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =61%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

45.75 is the 61% share of 75. The remaining 39% is 29.25, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 61% off an item priced $75 saves $45.75, so you pay $29.25.

Adding and taking away 61%

Increasing 75 by 61% gives 120.75 and decreasing it by 61% gives 29.25. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 61% and then lowering the result by 61% ends at 47.0925, because the second 61% is taken of a bigger number.
