How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 62 ÷ 100 = 0.62
  2. Multiply: 0.62 × 1 = 0.62
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.62 ÷ 1 × 100 = 62%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 62/100 = part/1, so part = 62 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.62. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =62%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.62 is the 62% share of 1. The remaining 38% is 0.38, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 62% off an item priced $1 saves $0.62, so you pay $0.38.

Adding and taking away 62%

Increasing 1 by 62% gives 1.62 and decreasing it by 62% gives 0.38. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 62% and then lowering the result by 62% ends at 0.6156, because the second 62% is taken of a bigger number.
