How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 62 ÷ 100 = 0.62
  2. Multiply: 0.62 × 15 = 9.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.3 ÷ 15 × 100 = 62%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 62/100 = part/15, so part = 62 × 15 ÷ 100 = 9.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =62%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.3 is the 62% share of 15. The remaining 38% is 5.7, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 62% off an item priced $15 saves $9.3, so you pay $5.7.

Adding and taking away 62%

Increasing 15 by 62% gives 24.3 and decreasing it by 62% gives 5.7. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 62% and then lowering the result by 62% ends at 9.234, because the second 62% is taken of a bigger number.
