How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 62 = 9.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.3 ÷ 62 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/62, so part = 15 × 62 ÷ 100 = 9.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*62. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.3 is the 15% share of 62. The remaining 85% is 52.7, and the two parts add back up to 62.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $62 saves $9.3, so you pay $52.7.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 62 by 15% gives 71.3 and decreasing it by 15% gives 52.7. These do not cancel out: raising 62 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 60.605, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
