How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 63 ÷ 100 = 0.63
  2. Multiply: 0.63 × 50 = 31.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 31.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 63%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 63/100 = part/50, so part = 63 × 50 ÷ 100 = 31.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =63%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

31.5 is the 63% share of 50. The remaining 37% is 18.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 63% off an item priced $50 saves $31.5, so you pay $18.5.

Adding and taking away 63%

Increasing 50 by 63% gives 81.5 and decreasing it by 63% gives 18.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 63% and then lowering the result by 63% ends at 30.155, because the second 63% is taken of a bigger number.
