How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65
  2. Multiply: 0.65 × 2 = 1.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.3 ÷ 2 × 100 = 65%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 65/100 = part/2, so part = 65 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =65%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.3 is the 65% share of 2. The remaining 35% is 0.7, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 65% off an item priced $2 saves $1.3, so you pay $0.7.

Adding and taking away 65%

Increasing 2 by 65% gives 3.3 and decreasing it by 65% gives 0.7. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 65% and then lowering the result by 65% ends at 1.155, because the second 65% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 65. 65% of 2 and 2% of 65 are always equal (both are 65 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.3), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
