How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65
  2. Multiply: 0.65 × 68 = 44.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 44.2 ÷ 68 × 100 = 65%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 65/100 = part/68, so part = 65 × 68 ÷ 100 = 44.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =65%*68. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

44.2 is the 65% share of 68. The remaining 35% is 23.8, and the two parts add back up to 68.

Discounts: 65% off an item priced $68 saves $44.2, so you pay $23.8.

Adding and taking away 65%

Increasing 68 by 65% gives 112.2 and decreasing it by 65% gives 23.8. These do not cancel out: raising 68 by 65% and then lowering the result by 65% ends at 39.27, because the second 65% is taken of a bigger number.
