How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 67 ÷ 100 = 0.67
  2. Multiply: 0.67 × 25 = 16.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 16.75 ÷ 25 × 100 = 67%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 67/100 = part/25, so part = 67 × 25 ÷ 100 = 16.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =67%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

16.75 is the 67% share of 25. The remaining 33% is 8.25, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 67% off an item priced $25 saves $16.75, so you pay $8.25.

Adding and taking away 67%

Increasing 25 by 67% gives 41.75 and decreasing it by 67% gives 8.25. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 67% and then lowering the result by 67% ends at 13.7775, because the second 67% is taken of a bigger number.
