How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 68 ÷ 100 = 0.68
  2. Multiply: 0.68 × 5 = 3.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.4 ÷ 5 × 100 = 68%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 68/100 = part/5, so part = 68 × 5 ÷ 100 = 3.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =68%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.4 is the 68% share of 5. The remaining 32% is 1.6, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 68% off an item priced $5 saves $3.4, so you pay $1.6.

Adding and taking away 68%

Increasing 5 by 68% gives 8.4 and decreasing it by 68% gives 1.6. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 68% and then lowering the result by 68% ends at 2.688, because the second 68% is taken of a bigger number.
