How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 69 ÷ 100 = 0.69
  2. Multiply: 0.69 × 15 = 10.35
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10.35 ÷ 15 × 100 = 69%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 69/100 = part/15, so part = 69 × 15 ÷ 100 = 10.35. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =69%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

10.35 is the 69% share of 15. The remaining 31% is 4.65, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 69% off an item priced $15 saves $10.35, so you pay $4.65.

Adding and taking away 69%

Increasing 15 by 69% gives 25.35 and decreasing it by 69% gives 4.65. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 69% and then lowering the result by 69% ends at 7.8585, because the second 69% is taken of a bigger number.
