How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 24 = 1.68
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.68 ÷ 24 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/24, so part = 7 × 24 ÷ 100 = 1.68. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*24. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.68 is the 7% share of 24. The remaining 93% is 22.32, and the two parts add back up to 24.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $24 saves $1.68, so you pay $22.32.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 24 by 7% gives 25.68 and decreasing it by 7% gives 22.32. These do not cancel out: raising 24 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 23.8824, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
