How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 28 = 1.96
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.96 ÷ 28 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/28, so part = 7 × 28 ÷ 100 = 1.96. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*28. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.96 is the 7% share of 28. The remaining 93% is 26.04, and the two parts add back up to 28.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $28 saves $1.96, so you pay $26.04.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 28 by 7% gives 29.96 and decreasing it by 7% gives 26.04. These do not cancel out: raising 28 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 27.8628, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
