How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 38 = 2.66
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.66 ÷ 38 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/38, so part = 7 × 38 ÷ 100 = 2.66. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*38. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.66 is the 7% share of 38. The remaining 93% is 35.34, and the two parts add back up to 38.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $38 saves $2.66, so you pay $35.34.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 38 by 7% gives 40.66 and decreasing it by 7% gives 35.34. These do not cancel out: raising 38 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 37.8138, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
