How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 65 = 4.55
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.55 ÷ 65 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/65, so part = 7 × 65 ÷ 100 = 4.55. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.55 is the 7% share of 65. The remaining 93% is 60.45, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $65 saves $4.55, so you pay $60.45.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 65 by 7% gives 69.55 and decreasing it by 7% gives 60.45. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 64.6815, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
