How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 75 = 5.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.25 ÷ 75 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/75, so part = 7 × 75 ÷ 100 = 5.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.25 is the 7% share of 75. The remaining 93% is 69.75, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $75 saves $5.25, so you pay $69.75.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 75 by 7% gives 80.25 and decreasing it by 7% gives 69.75. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 74.6325, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
