How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 83 = 5.81
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.81 ÷ 83 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/83, so part = 7 × 83 ÷ 100 = 5.81. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*83. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.81 is the 7% share of 83. The remaining 93% is 77.19, and the two parts add back up to 83.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $83 saves $5.81, so you pay $77.19.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 83 by 7% gives 88.81 and decreasing it by 7% gives 77.19. These do not cancel out: raising 83 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 82.5933, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
