How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 16 = 11.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11.2 ÷ 16 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/16, so part = 70 × 16 ÷ 100 = 11.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*16. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11.2 is the 70% share of 16. The remaining 30% is 4.8, and the two parts add back up to 16.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $16 saves $11.2, so you pay $4.8.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 16 by 70% gives 27.2 and decreasing it by 70% gives 4.8. These do not cancel out: raising 16 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 8.16, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
