How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 18 = 12.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12.6 ÷ 18 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/18, so part = 70 × 18 ÷ 100 = 12.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*18. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12.6 is the 70% share of 18. The remaining 30% is 5.4, and the two parts add back up to 18.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $18 saves $12.6, so you pay $5.4.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 18 by 70% gives 30.6 and decreasing it by 70% gives 5.4. These do not cancel out: raising 18 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 9.18, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
