How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 38 = 26.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 26.6 ÷ 38 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/38, so part = 70 × 38 ÷ 100 = 26.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*38. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

26.6 is the 70% share of 38. The remaining 30% is 11.4, and the two parts add back up to 38.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $38 saves $26.6, so you pay $11.4.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 38 by 70% gives 64.6 and decreasing it by 70% gives 11.4. These do not cancel out: raising 38 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 19.38, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
